  • 7 year old James lives with his dad. His dad often drinks during the day, so from when James gets home from school, he gets frustrated at the littlest things, even things that James can't control. He always takes a break, but before bedtime, he'll call for James, who'll come downstairs, and he'll start yelling, and throwing objects at James and hitting him with random objects, like rocks and heavy objects, then threaten him with dangerous objects, saying that if he told anyone, then he'll get more, and he'll do even worse things, such as burning, biting, slapping with a belt, and more.

  • James rushes to school early to get away from his dad, and stays late at school. He wears shirts that are usually long-sleeved or if he doesn't have to much bruising, a t-shirt. He wears trousers so no one can see his back or stomach, and wears long pants and long socks so nobody can see the marks from his dads abusing. He is always very quiet at school, doesn't join in to the kids fun in games and sports, always chooses to work independently in class, and usually never raises his hand. When gym class comes around, he always says he has to "go to the bathroom' or "fill up my water bottle" and just go to the bathroom and change there, so no one sees the marks. He doesn't want anyone to see, partly because he knew the consequences if anyone found out, and because he didn't want to be made fun of at school. His dad also didn't buy him anything else, so as not to raise suspicion.

  • One day, while James was eating his lunch alone, as usual, his arm itched. he was wearing a long sleeved shirt that day, and he thought no one was looking, so he quickly rolled up his sleeve. The lunch supervisor, a nice teacher named Mrs. Labeur, saw, and on his arm was a whole bunch of scrapes and bruises. Then, there were a few bloody scabs, and a few burn marks, as well as some pieces cut off his skin, almost like something sharp had torn his skin. She came over and asked him, " Oh no, what happened to your arm?" He quickly rolled his sleeve up and stammered, " Oh, nothing." She looked at him, and he was getting very nervous, and, having 4 of her own children, knew that face well, because 2 of them had gotten bullied at school when they were his age. She thought back. His arms had burns, bloody scabs, and wait, was that a bite mark? "James, what actually happened, did someone hurt you? "No, I'm fine." "Are you sure? Where did those cuts and bruises come from then?" "Oh, those, I, I, I just, tripped over the rug." "Are you sure, what about the burns, scabs, and those, bite marks or whatever?" "I'm totally fine, and anyhow, I, I, I have a dog!" " Oh, alright." She said. But in her mind she was thinking something different. None of his explanations matched the marks, and since she taught ELA, 3 weeks before she made a task for them to make a story about a pet of theirs, or a made up one if they didn't have one. He said he would do it on a dog because he didn't have one. Strange, she thought. She went and called his dad, asking for an explanation to see if he actually had tripped on the rug, or had a dog, because if they were true, his dad would know, right?
