The duke of Athens, Theseus, is planning on marrying Hippolyta. Their wedding is set to be four days away, on the new moon. They are both very excited to be wed and want to share their excitement with the rest of Athens.

In the first scene of Act 1, Egeus brings Hermia to the Duke Theseus to complain. She will not agree to marry Demetrius because she loves Lysander. Theuses tells her that if she does not agree to marry Demetrius, then she will either have to become a nun or she will be killed. She has four days to make her decision.

What?
Lysander and Hermia make a plan to run away. They decide that they will go to Lysander´s aunt's house, which is deep in the woods. There, they can be happy together and not be under Athenian law. Then, Helena comes outside. Lysander and Hermia tell her about their plan. She decides that she will use this information as a way to get Demetrius to love her again.
