When everyone is given the “okay” to proceed in opening their chosen paper slip. The word is quickly spread that the Hutchinson family had the black dot on their paper. Bill is regretful as he is the reason one of his family members will be chosen. Tessie shouts and exclaims how it is unfair and her husband did not get enough time to choose. The family of five then each picks a slip of paper again. Tessie is the one to draw the black dot.

The crowd of the other villagers begin to close in on Tessie. Tessie, in horror, realizes she will now be the next victim of the lottery. The villagers, kids and adults, begin to collect the stones that had been gathered earlier by the children. Tessie is pushed into the center as the ritual proceeds. Tessie screams and makes a poor attempt to resist against the crowd.

Rocks begin to be thrown and brutally hit at Tessie as she is stoned to death. Her earlier protests were fully ignored, even at her final cry of, “It isn’t fair!”. The yearly ritual has successfully been completed and the town returns to normal.
