- Proctor says that he is thinking of confessing. Whether he does, he asks Elizabeth if she will forgive him. Elizabeth tells him that she has forgave him for the affair and says that it is his choice.

- Proctor openly admits to doing witchcraft, but he declines to identify anyone else besides him. The court requires a sworn document as evidence of his confessions. When Proctor discovers the court will post the confession on the door of the church and damage his family's reputation, he signs the confession but then rips it apart.
- Hale begs Elizabeth to persuade Proctor to reconsider. Elizabeth refuses to and s he notices that John Proctor now feels satisfied with himself.
