  • Causes
  • After the Spanish-American War in 1895-1898, the United States was considered a world power. WWI began in 1914, yet the United States chose to remain neutral. America had been exporting goods to the Allied Powers, yet hadn’t joined the combat yet. Germany didn’t want this to happen, so they sent a telegram to Mexico telling them to invade us. If they did so, they could have Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona back. Invading us would keep the U.S. out of the war and it would also slow down our exportation of supplies, in turn making it easier for the Central Powers.

  • The Germans wanted Mexico to invade the U.S. so you wouldn't join the Great War. We thought we should show you this in case you change your mind and join us.
  • I HATE THOSE GERMANS!
  • Csúszik: 3
  • Effects
  • Great Britain intercepted the message and gave it to us in hopes that we would now join the war. We at first believed the telegram to be fake, however it was later proven true, even by the person who wrote it. President Woodrow Wilson had the telegram published, which had sparked many strong news against the Central Powers. The United States declared war on Germany on April 4th, 1917 after the Zimmerman Telegram and the sinking of the Lusitania. WWI ended on November 11th, 1918 with the victor being the Allied Powers.
