- Gallaudet and the girl
- The hat
- First it all started with a young man named Thomas Gallaudet who was a hearing man who studied often and ended up graduating from Yale.
- To Establish a school for the deaf
- One day Thomas came across a little girl who was sitting by herself while other kids played. He wondered why she was excluded so he asked one of the kids and they said she was deaf and dumb Intrigued he walked over there and began talking to her and tried teaching her the word hat.
- That feels unnatural
- He had wrote hat in the sand to try and teach the girl the word along with showing her what a hat was. She then proceeded to show write it back to him, surprising him and showing him that the deaf can indeed learn.
- Gallaudet and Clerc
- After having a conversation with the girls father he decides that he should establish a school for the deaf here in America as they had no form of education for them. So he went to study other schools from different countries to find a suitable way to provide such education for them.
- First Thomas went to England where he searches and finds a school. He studies the schools methods and only found that he didn't like it as they were forcing the deaf children to use their voice and that just seemed unnatural to him. He wanted them to have a more natural and better means of communicating.
- Next Gallaudet heard about a school for the deaf and dumb in France and went over to study their method and found that he liked their method better. This is where he met Clerc. He found that he actually taught the children sign language. He tried to take notes of it all but found there was to much to note so he asked for clerc to come back with him to America to help him establish the first deaf school in America and Clerc agreed to do so.
