- The Van Daan's have arrived at the building. The Franks have not arrived yet. This causes concern in Mrs. Van Daan. On the other hand Mr. Van Daan believes that it may have taken a little longer because the walk is two miles.
- Where are they? They should be here by now. What if they were taken by the Green Police?
- I am sure they are fine. It is a two mile walk. It is bound to take a while.
- I apologize for our lateness. There were too many Green Police and we had to take the long way.
- It is lovely to meet you all. I am Edith. These are my daughters Margot and Anne.
- The Franks finally arrive. They arrive along with Mr. Kraler and Miep. It is learned that there are Green Police in the streets. But everyone who will be staying in the Annex is there.
- No worries, we are glad you could make it.
- Here are the bedrooms. Then over here is the wc. You can find soap and drugs over here. I have to go to get ration books but I will be back soon.
- Miep and Mr. Kraler show the Van Daan's and the Frank's around the Annex . They also show them where different things are. But it is going to be a tight fit as there are a lot of people and not a lot of space. Even though it is a small fit the families are very grateful.
- Thank you very much Miep. You as well Mr. Kraler.
- Miep left to get Ration books. Mr. Kraler went back down to the office. Mr. Frank explains that while there are workers in the building they need to be quiet. He also has them take off their shoes so that they can be more silent.
- What? No talking!
- Now that Miep and Mr. Kraler are gone I need to tell you guys the rules. There are workers here from 8:30 to 5:30. That means from 8:00 to 6:00 we need to be quiet and as still as possible.
- As everyone settles in, Anne and Peter talk to each other for a while. They talk about school and how they went to the same school but Anne never saw Peter. Then after a while, they removed the stars that had been put on their clothes. Then, Peter decides that he wants to burn his. Anne doesn't want to burn hers as it is the Star of David. Peter questions her about it but the conversation is ended when Mrs. Frank comes into the room to talk to Peter.
- What are you doing?
- I don't want to get rid of it. I mean in the end it is the Star of David. That is why I am going to keep mine.
- Removing the star from my clothes. We are staying here so we can't get in trouble for it. Don't you want to remove something they branded you with?
- Anne receives a diary and decides to go downstairs in order to grab a pencil but her father stopped her. He explained to her that no matter what, she can't go out the door. It is never safe. This causes Anne to realize how serious this is. Even though she couldn't go downstairs she still writes about the days in her diary.
- A diary! Thank you so much! I have always wanted a diary. I'm going to go downstairs and grab a pencil
- No, Anne you can't! You can't ever go downstairs! It isn't safe.
