In 1947 trade union workers staged a strike and in 1948, another riot against jobs broke out, resulting in the death of three veterans. Then a group of cocoa farmers staged one as well, which exploded into the Accra Riots.

Nkurmah ended up breaking away from the UGCC and formed his own political party. The CPP. While in prison, Nkurmah ran in the first election of African leaders to the national government and won. Promising a better life under African rule and gaining popular support.
He eventually took over as Prime Minister, using profits from cocoa to build schools and hospitals. Though, the Ashanti were skeptical of the CPP, holding favor of the British and forming the NLM. However, the CPP won the elections again in 1957, where independence was granted. Naming the country as "GHANA"
