- "Don't do it, Tommy! Don't you bloody do it!" (Dashner 112)
- *Griever sounds
- "We have to split up--it's our only chance. Just keep moving. Don't stop moving!" (Dashner 118)
- "Please turn the other way. Go. That way. Please!" (Dashner 128)
- Minho and Alby go out to the Maze in the morning, looking for a dead Griever. They do not return until evening, and Alby is stung. Thomas knows he has no choice, and enters the maze, just as the walls close.
- "Are there more of them? Did we just kill them all?" (Dashner 140)
- Thomas and Minho are now trapped in the Maze, and they need to find a way to survive the night. As they discuss their plan, the sounds of the Grievers grow louder and louder. Minho leaves Thomas and Alby.
- "What happened? How in the bloody--" (Dashner 143)
- "We'll tell you later. We have to save Alby." (Dashner 143)
- After Minho left, Thomas cannot just ditch Alby, who is still knocked out. When the Grievers arrive, Thomas climbs the ivy, pulling Alby with him. Soon after, Thomas is forced to run as the Grievers close in.
- "That's ridiculous!" (Dashner 159)
- Thomas is hopeless and lost until he suddenly runs into Minho. Minho then leads him to the Cliff, where they lead the Grievers to fall off the Cliff. The two boys, exhausted, sit down and cry until sunrise.
- "I can't believe it. Seriously. We made it through the whole night--never been done before." (Dashner 140)
- Thomas and Minho finally return to the Glade and talk to angry Newt. They tell Newt that Alby is still alive, hanging in the ivy from the night before. Newt and the other Gladers retrieve Alby, while Thomas and Minho rest.
- The Gladers call for a Gathering as soon as Thomas and Minho return. The Keepers give their opinions on what should be done about Thomas, and with Minho and Newt's help, Thomas becomes a Runner.
- "I would like to nominate this shank to replace me as Keeper of the Runners." (Dashner 158)
