  • It can be thought in this way, that Mirabilis jalapa uses these two for multimodal signalling where the fragrance acts as a long-range signal and when the pollinator is nearby in the dark then the fluorescence acts as a short-range signal to guide the pollinator to the precise location. However, it still needs experimental establishment as it is just a hypothesis given by researchers. If you may wonder about different functional groups in the structures explained then I will tell you. In Dopaxanthin, betalamic acid acts as the chemical scaffold for the chromophore of the pigment. In betanin, there occurs glycosylation which can contribute in the stability of the molecule as well as its identity.

  • Sir, I just thought about the flowers that bloom in night. They are usually white/ pale in colour and have a very strong fragrance to attract the pollinators. But in the case of Mirabilis jalapa, it blooms in the evening and has a strong fragrance and also has brightly coloured petals. I want to know that in this case how is the flower ensuring reproductive fitness when the pollinators cannot see the colour of petals in the dark. Isn’t it the waste of energy on the flower’s part.
  • That’s a very nice question and I appreciate that you could think in such a way. I actually got asked a similar question in one of my interviews and I would love to answer this again. Now listen to me carefully and I will explain you everything from the chemistry to what is actually happening in the nature.

  • I hope this answers your doubt, Abhyudaya.
  • Yes sir, and thankyou so much! I am highly motivated to study more about this and maybe I can discover something new in this field.
  • Very good! I appreciate your attitude and also remember that this is how science progresses. Inquisitive minds like yours play a vital role in achieving newer milestones in science.
