- Percy encounters his oddest experience yet while on a field trip to a museum with his sixth-grade classmates. Percy gets punished by his math teacher, Mrs Dodds, after an argument with a bully at school. He is abruptly attacked by Mrs Dodds when she changes into a monster. Mr Brunner, one of Percy's favourite teachers, saves him by tossing him a ballpoint pen that transforms into a sword.
- Although Mrs Dodds is defeated by Percy, no one remembers her when he is reunited with his fellow classmates. In response, Percy misbehaves and gets kicked out of school. On the bus ride home, Percy questions Grover about something he overheard Mr. Brunner and his friend Grover discussing Percy's impending future. Percy and Grover spot three elderly women crocheting across the street as the bus breaks down. Percy and Grover discuss how one of the women cuts a string as a death sign.
- A monster chases after them and attacks their mother, causing her to disappear into a golden light. Enraged, and fearing his mother's death, Percy defeats the monster and takes home one of its horns.
- At the camp, Percy meets Clarisse, the daughter of Ares, Annabeth, the daughter of Athena, and Luke, his cabin counsellor. Percy learns after a fight with Clarisse that Poseidon, one of the Big Three gods, is his father.
- Zeus has accused Poseidon of stealing his lightning bolt and requires his son to return it before the solstice. Chiron believes Hades stole the bolt to start a war between the gods. Percy went to see wheteh what Chiron was saying was true or not

- Percy, Grover, and Annabeth escape the Underworld and arrive in Santa Monica with the help of the magical pearls. They realize they have been manipulated by Ares. Percy confronts him about stealing the bolt and the helm. The two engage in battle. Percy defeats Ares after stabbing him in the heel.
