No, this can't be happening. There's so many that I've never gotten to experience yet, and now I never will.
Hello, I'm calling from Death-Cast. I'm Andrea. Mateo, I regret to inform you that sometime in the next 24 hours you'll be meeting an untimely death. On behalf of everyone here at Death-Cast, we are so sorry to lose you. Live this day to the fullest okay?
Yo Victor, be a person for a minute. I don't know if you know, but I'm 17. Three weeks from my 18th birthday. Doesn't it ____ you off that I'll never go to college? Get married? Have kids? Travel? Doubt it. You're just chilling on your little throne in your little office because you know you got another few decades ahead of you, right?
The story takes place in a dystopian alternate version of New York, in September 2017. This alternate version of New York contains advanced technology, with something called Death-Cast in their society, an organization that takes the responsibility of calling and informing citizens about their death within the next 24 hours.
The novel features two teenage boys that are the protagonists of the story. One named Mateo Torrez (an 18-year-old Puerto Rican teen) and the other named Rufus Emeterio (a 17-year-old Cuban-American teen). The novel starts with both teenagers receiving their call from Death-Cast around 12 am-1 am, informing them that they'll die sometime in the next 24 hours. When Death-Cast called, Mateo was in his bedroom browsing through the Countdowners platform (the live streaming blog for Deckers to film their End Day), reading their latest cover, and watching their latest blogs.
No, I'm not stepping out into a world that will kill me before my time.
I'll just spend my final day on watching CountDowners, playing video games, and reading, while listening to Dad's favourite CDs.
While Mateo was in his bedroom when he received the call, Rufus was out with his foster brothers/friends beating up his ex-girlfriend's new boyfriend, Peck. He was beating him up for spreading lies and rumours about why Aimee (Rufus's former girlfriend) broke up with him. Rufus was about to give Peck one last punch until his phone started ringing. When he saw that it was Death-Cast, he ignored it at first, but he eventually answered after avoiding it three times. Rufus's call with Victor (his Death-Cast herald) didn't go too well, as he felt like Death-Cast had always pretended to feel bad for whoever was dying, so he tells Victor to be a person.
?!
DUDE, THE POLICE ARE HERE. GO OUT FROM THE BACK, TAGOE AND I WILL SLOW THEM DOWN!
WHAT THE HECK PECK?
Rufus ended up letting peck go because he wanted to say goodbye to the Plutos (his foster family's name) and Aimee, informing them about his End Day. He also wanted to instruct the Plutos to host an early funeral for him at their house. On their ride home, Tagoe and Malcolm were really sad that Rufus was going to leave them, as they made a promise that they'd always be there for one another no matter what.
Since Mateo was going to die soon, he vowed to leave his apartment sooner or later to visit his father at the hospital and his best friend Lidia one last time, to say goodbye and thank them for everything they had done for him. (Mateo’s dad's been in a coma for about two weeks now). However, Mateo’s promise did not go as planned, as he quickly retreated inside after looking out the door. He couldn’t do it because he was paralyzed by fear, due to the number of risks outside.
At home, Aimee showed up to confront Rufus about Peck’s injuries. After talking things out upstairs, Aimee decided to stay and attend Rufus’s funeral, and she forced Peck to stay as well. During the funeral, all of them took turns giving a speech. Aimee’s speech was interrupted by police sirens. The three boys knew that Peck had called the police on Rufus for assault. Malcolm tells Rufus to escape on his bike from the back door of the house so that he doesn't spend his last day in jail. And so, Rufus ran away without getting to say a proper goodbye to his loved ones.
I can't believe this is finally it. I just feel like I haven't fully processed the fact that I'm going to die in less than 24 hours... Wait, what?
