- Life in the camps were very boring, some camps would establish weekly newspapers, photographic establishments, temperance leagues, post offices, libraries, churches, and theaters to try and keep the soldiers occupied,. Many would write many more letter than they would receive from family
- During the Civil War, almost 200,000 African Americans enlisted in the army, but were given the roles of cooks or construction workers, they were not able to be promoted until 1865. They were paid three dollars less than white soldiers for ding the same job.
- The medical treatment during the civil. war was very poor, there was no anesthesia so if you were to undergo surgery, you would do it completely awake. Many died from the shock of surgery or killed themselves before they had to go through it. Hospitals were like tents. If a limb was badly broken, it would be too difficult to fix it, so it would be amputated.
- The diet of a soldier depended on whether you served the north or the south. The north usually had beans, bacon, pickled beef, pork, and hardtrack biscuits. In the south, they would eat things such as sloosh, cornbread, beef, and peas.
- More than 50,000 people died in prisoner of war camps, the most fatal disease was dysentery, and people would have to burrow in the ground to avoid the sun. There was a very short supply of food, and things like tobacco, rats pickles, pork and bread were used for currency
- During the battles of the Civil War there would normally be a great cloud of smoke covering the battlefield from the gunpowder, it would be very loud from all the yelling and gunshots.
