  • Wow, the piano is actually really nice. I should play more often.
  • Jing-Mei plays the piano at a talent show and plays horribly.
  • After the talent show, Jing-Mei and her mother get into a big fight over Jing-Mei’s behavior. Jing-Mei responds by saying insulting and insensitive things. This left her mom speechless and she walked away. This moment sparked a turning point in the story as the mother finally stopped pressuring her daughter to become a prodigy.
  • More than 20 years later, Jing-Mei’s mother died. She receives her old piano as a gift and realizes how beautiful the piano was. She gets it tuned and plays the song she played at the talent show, yet this time she enjoyed it. She flips through her music book to find another piece, “Perfectly Contented.” Jing-Mei comes to the realization that they were two halves of the same song, symbolizing her childhood versus adulthood. The piano brought her closure, and knowledge, that her mother believed in her no matter what. Overall her mom taught her daughter a lesson, to never change and always be yourself.
