The witches say their chants to Macbeth which are interpreted by him as fortunes. He asks them to explain more, but they vanish into thin air.

Macbeth and Banquo discuss what just happened. They gather that according to the witches, Macbeth will stay Thane of Glamis, but will become Thane of Cawdor, as well as King. Banquo will not become any of these, but his children will.
