- The initial meiotic division, known as meiosis I, reduces the number of chromosomes (reduction division). Homologous chromosomes are divided during this procedure. The division is typically accompanied by cytokinesis.

- Meiosis 1 separates the pair of homologous chromosomes and reduces the diploid cell to haploid. It is divided into several stages that include; prophase I - each chromosome aligns with its homolog, pairs with that homolog, and crossing over at chiasmata, metaphase I - at the equatorial plate, the bivalents align, and microtubules from the opposing poles connect to the homologous chromosomal pairs, anaphase - each bivalent's two chromosomes split and migrate to the cell's opposing ends, and telophase - a full haploid set of duplicated chromosomes can be found in each half of the cell. .

- Cells move from meiosis I to meiosis II without copying their DNA. Meiosis II is a shorter and simpler process than meiosis I, and you may find it helpful to think of meiosis II as “mitosis for haploid cells.The cells that enter meiosis II are the ones made in meiosis I.
