  • Around 265 BCE, Ashoka became Emperor and set out to extend his empire by force. He conquered the last of India's independent kingdoms, as well as other western countries, and expanded his kingdom to cover the majority of the Indian subcontinent.

  • As he watched the devastation the battle had created and the vanquished Kalingans being brought into slavery, Ashoka grew sad. Later, he noticed a Buddhist monk meditating in the middle of the havoc and destruction in a street and wondered how such a man, who had nothing, could be so happy. What is clear is that Ashoka converted to Buddhism shortly after his conquest of Kalinga and this chance contact with a Buddhist monk.

  • He freed all of his sleeves, and treated his people equal. Ahimsa became a belief and practice for Ashoka. After his conversion, Ashoka encouraged his subjects to become Buddhists, but he gave everyone in his empire religious freedom.
  • Thousands of stupas were also built across his reign. These mound-like buildings hold Buddhist holy artifacts and serve as places of devotion for Buddhists. Many people claim to be in possession of the Buddha's ashes, which were cremated following his death.
  • The Mauryan Empire fell apart after Ashoka died in 238 BCE. His conversion to Buddhism, on the other hand, was a significant event. Despite the fact that Buddhism is not India's biggest religion now, Ashoka's legacy helped the religion's spread to other areas and nations.
