In the 1760s the British government applied several taxes on the American Colonies, of course the people weren't satisfied with these laws.
As a protest the colonist in 1773 dumped a shipment of tea from Britain, this event was called as the Boston Tea Party. As a consequence Britain tried to punish the colonist by increasing taxes, this made even angrier the colonist which were ready for a revolution.
After the first armed conflict on Lexington, Massachusetts, (April 19, 1775) one year later on 1776 Colonial leaders signed the Declaration of Independence written by Thomas Jefferson. Some time later another Colonial leader, Benjamin Franklin asked for help to the French to finish the fight against the British.

With the help of the loan and the soldiers provided by the French Government, George Washington was able to win the final battle of Yorktown in 1781, and in 1783 both sides signed the Treaty of Paris on which the British recognized the American Independence.
