Comic Assignment

My husband and I were married on a beach in Jamaica in 2015. He had two sons from a previous marriage, so after our wedding, I became an instant mother.
Things were not always easy for my step-sons. They suffered neglect, trauma, and abuse at the hands of their mother and her boyfriend.
My husband and I worked very hard to try and help them cope with the problems at their mother's house, but with nothing changing there, it seemed like an endless struggle.
Things came to a boiling point when our youngest started having serious behavior issues in school after his finger was broken as a form of punishment. We got to the point that my husband or I ended up being called to the school every day.
After almost four years, countless meetings with different therapists, school staff, social workers, pediatricians, attorneys, and dozens of court hearings, my husband and I were finally able to get our boys full-time.
It has been almost 3 years since we saved our kids. Our family has grown, our kids are happier and healthier than ever, and I am hoping to adopt our two oldest in the coming year. This experience has taught me that biology is not what makes a parent, and a mother will do whatever it takes to protect her children.
