Natural selection is how some animals survive in an environment better than others because of their adaptations. Lets go to the desert and I can show you an example.
What's natural selection? I've heard of it but don't know what it is.
Yes.
Why did we need to come hear?
That hawk will see that brown mouse because it stands out but the sandy colored mouse can hide so it won't get eaten as often. This makes it so the sandy mouse will have more offspring and overtime there will be more of them and less brown mice.
Do you see that hawk and the mice?
Wow! There are way more sandy colored mice than brown ones.
Yep because the sandy mice blend in they Survive better. A man named Dr. Kettlewell did this same thing with moths. Let's go back to the house and I'll keep explaining.
Dr. Kettlewell was a scientist. He did lots of experiments about natural selection. He studied black and white moths and he discovered that the black ones lived longer on black trees and that this let them have more offspring.
You said something about a man named Dr. Kettlewell, but who is he?
Yes, a predator needs to be able to catch prey. This means that the stronger and faster predators will survive better. They also need to blend in just like their prey lets go back to the dessert and I'll show you.
Does natural selection happen to predators to?
Thanks for explaining all this to me. It makes a lot of sense now.
Those snakes both want to catch that mouse, but the red one stands out so the mouse will see it coming and escape but the other on  blends in with the sand so the mouse won't see it and the snake will get a meal. This will make it more likely that the sand colored snake can get enough food and live to have offspring with the same traits but the red one will probably die because it will have a hard time getting food.
