- "If that weren't trial enough, a few hours of standing and her proud new boots and her feet had swollen so that the laces had caught into her flesh...she nearly burst into tears." (p.75)
- This is Man vs. Man because she was very offended by what the mistress said, it insulted her appearance. Lyddie was the man and the mistress was the other man.
- This is Man vs. Nature because she has to stop at the closest village in order to get out of the rain. Lyddie is the man and the rain is the nature.
- This is Man vs. Self because she was frustrated and upset because her boot laces were digging into her flesh and they were stuck in a knot.
