Doggie Domestication
This is a dog! Her name is Daisy, and she's a service dog. Her species wasn't always this domesticated though, so why are dogs different now?
Daisy's ancestors looked like this! They were wolves, completely wild, and quite big.
After humans met wolves, they cooperated together, eventually producing a domesticated species of dog.
They are much smaller than wolves, and had branched off to a completely different species.
Humans played a role in separating them from the general population, and selectively breeding them to produce different breeds.
Wolves evolved into dogs through genetic mutations and evolution. Their isolation was behavioral.
One example of a mutation is a version of the K locus gene that dogs carry. It's dominant to wolves' lighter coat colors.
This gene isn't present in wolves; it sends messages to the pigment cells which causes a large production of melanin.
Humans have created many different kind of dog breeds, some that are even half wolf!
Though the species are diverged from each other, they are able to breed with each other, and live in this world simultaneously.
