- The setting takes place in medieval Scotland. Three witches have gathered in desolate a place preparing a spell for Macbeth. When Macbeth and Banquo meet with the witches, the witches tell them their prophesizes. The witches tell that Macbeth will become Thane of Glamis, Thane of Cawdor, and King of Scotland. Banquo receives a puzzling prophecy. He will be both lesser and greater than Macbeth. Banquo is suspicious about these prophesizes, while Macbeth is convinced.
