- Lives with Aunt and Uncle for 8 years in their dysfunctional house. Jeffery can't take it anymore and runs away.
- The Name "Maniac Magee"
- The town of Two Mills is segregated .
- Jeffery meets Amanda and borrows a book from her.
- Jeffery kicks the ball with the book in his hand. The ball goes so far the football team cannot believe it. They give him the name "Manic Magee" because he is always running.

- Maniac Magee moves in with the Beale family. He doesn't understand segregation. Amanda teaches him about him. He then runs away again.
- Maniac Magee lives in a baseball shed. He friends Grayson who takes care of him.
- Maniac Magee meets Mars Bars and races him. He beats Mars Bars and becomes friends. Maniac Magee ends up living with the Beales family again calling it his forever home.
