  • EXPOSITION
  • RISING ACTION
  • CONFLICT
  • Hazel Grace Lancaster is a 16-year-old thyroid cancer patient. Despite the fact that an experimental medicine has delayed the progression of her cancer, Hazel is aware that she has a limited life. Because of the cancer in her lungs, she is unable to breathe without the assistance of a portable oxygen tank and tubes. This unveils a very dispiriting topic of "What it's like to be a teenage girl with thyroid cancer?" We see the ups and downs of a day with cancer; not going to school, being looked after obsessively by her parents, watching lots of TV shows, and attending a Support Group through Hazel’s point of view.
  • CLIMAX
  • When Hazel meets Augustus, a boy in her Support Group, things began to get interesting. They'll soon be gushing over the Hazel’s favorite book called An Imperial Affliction that she recommended to Augustus … and then there were late-night calls. With his presence, Hazel begins to get a glimpse of a another “life” other than her cancer-stricken finite life. Augustus begins corresponding with Hazel's favorite author, and lo and behold, they are invited to Amsterdam to seek answers from the Author of the book about what happens in the end.
  • FALLING ACTION
  • Hazel and Augustus grow fonder through the book and starts to like him more, but Hazel is wary of becoming romantically involved with him because she is well aware that she is a grenade that at some point, she’ll blow up and doesn’t want him to get hurt. Struggling to think over what to do about Augustus, Hazel suffers a critical episode when her lungs fill with fluid and she is rushed to the ICU, hampering their trip to Amsterdam. She could not go unless and until there was medical agreement that it would be safe.
  • RESOLUTION
  • I like my choices. I hope she likes hers.I do, Augustus. I do.
  • Lo and behold, the Doctors finally gave her the chance to live her life – Augustus, Hazel, and Hazel's mother went to Amsterdam. But when Hazel and Augustus meet Van Houten, they discover a sour-faced drunk who refuses to answer any of Hazel's questions. They left Van Houten's house, escorted by Lidewij and went to Anne Frank’s house instead. At the endof their tour, Hazel and Augustus, shared a romantic kiss and they finally gave into their raging hormones. They went for a walk the next day and agreed to start a romantic relationship, only to find out that Agustus' cancer had returned and was incurable. They return to Indianapolis realizing that Augustus is now the grenade. Soon after, Hazel receives an urgent call from Augustus before dawn, and she rushes to his dying boyfriend, who was stuck outside of a gas station with a malfunctioning G-tube. Hazel dialed 911.
  • As Augustus health worsens, he loses his usual charm and personality. He becomes fragile and anxious, but Hazel still sees him as a lovely young man. She stops calling him Augustus and instead refers to him as Gus, as his parents do. Hazelrealizes that she still loves him as much as she did before. Augustus'condition rapidly deteriorates. Augustus plans a prefuneral for himself in hisfinal days, and Isaac and Hazel deliver eulogies. Hazel quotes Van Houten'sphrase about larger and smaller infinities. She expresses her love for Augustusand states that she would not trade their little infinity for anything in theworld.
  • Eight days later, Augustus dies. Hazel is devastated by Augustus' death. Augustus insisted that Peter Van Houten make amends for ruining the trip to Amsterdam by attending his burial to see Hazel. Van Houten explains that he authored An Imperial Affliction when his daughter died of cancer. Augustus had written something for Hazel, Isaac tells her. He mentioned drafting a sequel to An Imperial Affliction for her, and Hazel rushes to find the pages she encounters Van Houten once more. Augustus sent the letters to Van Houten so Van Houten might write a decent eulogy about Hazel.
