Polar Bears have been struggling from the effects of climate change for years, The climate change has impacted their habitats, their way of life, and their diets.
The polar bears have had to choose earlier and earlier every year whether to stay on the ice or move to the land. Sea ice loss has been directly linked to the decline of the polar bear population. The ice is shrinking by 14% per decade. Polar bears are now having to swim a lot more for their food now that the ice is melting.
Polar bears need about 12,000 calories a day. Because of the melting ice, they are having to swim to get to other ice patches. Including the walking for food, the bears are burning more calories. When they lose more calories than they can replace, they begin burning through fat and even their own muscle.
The dens of polar bears are very important to their survival. They help the bears conserve energy and provide many other uses. When seal densities are low, the polar bears will stay in their dens to help conserve energy. Because of the warming weather, the dens have started to collapse - which can kill the cubs.
It is important that we try to help these special creatures before it is too late, and we lose them forever.
