Mildredddd!
The city looks like baking a heap of baking powder ... We must continue upstream.
Back on the run, Montag runs towards the river without being noticed by the police or hound. The police ask for everybody's help in finding him, but the effort is in vain. Though the hound makes it to the river, it turns around as Montag is three hundred yards downstream and undetectable. The hound is also unable to smell him, as he changed into Faber's clothes. During this time, Montag realizes he needs to stop burning things, as the sun already burns time.
Following the river downstream, Montag feels the warmth and smells the wonderful scent of a fire. He also hears welcoming voices. These five men, including Granger, are runaway intellectuals. These men read books and retain the usable knowledge, then burn the evidence of the books. Granger analyzes the police chase on the TV and explains how the police and news faked the finding of "Montag," as the man they found was not actually him.
Granger and Montag watch the war end in an instant, as the bombs dropped on the city and destroyed it immediately. While this occurs, Montag worries for his wife, Mildred, and can hear the sound of death. Granger informs Montag that they must continue traveling, as it is their job to "remember." Montag has the role of remembering the Book of Ecclesiastes. This knowledge might be useful to others one day.
