  • In 1844, President James K. Polk supported Manifest Destiny. After Texas was annexed in 1845, Polk wanted to gain California, New Mexico, and the disputed area along the Texas–Mexico border. Mexico refused to give up these territories, creating major tension.

  • Polk tried to buy California and New Mexico by sending diplomat John Slidell to Mexico, but Mexico refused to even meet him. Frustrated, Polk sent U.S. troops into the disputed border area to make Mexico respond to them. On April 25, 1846, Mexican troops fired on American soldiers. Polk declared that Mexico had shed American blood on American soil, and Congress declared war.

  • Although many Americans questioned whether the war was justified, Generals Zachary Taylor and Winfield Scott led U.S. forces to major victories. Even though Mexican troops often outnumbered Americans, the United States continued to win. In September 1847, Scott’s troops captured Mexico City, ending the fighting.
