Zebulon Pike was one of the first to explore western Kansas. He described it as a desert and thought it was worthless. The reason why it was so dry was that it was in western Kansas.

Stephen Long was the first person to reach Kansas by steamboat. He also thought it was a desert and had no petechial. That is how Western Kansas got the name "The Great American Desert".

The white Americans forced the American Indians out of the good land. They forced them to go to western Kansas. The Indians found it very hard to live and survive there. It started a rivalry between the tribes.
