One of the most popular stories about Athena is about how she became the protector of Athens. The great city of Athens was originally named Cecropia. It was named this because the original founder, Cecrops, named it after himself. Cecrops was a half man half lizard, and king of Creropia.
Cecropia Prospered to the point where people said that it was so beautiful it was a worthy home of a god. The gods and goddesses saw this and argued about who would claim the territory. In the end, it was a fight against Athena and Posiden
Athena and Posiden came down to earth and offered Cecrops gifts.Cecrops and the people then were to decide who would be the patron.
Posiden was up first he used his trident and created a water spring. This was to ensure that the people of Creropia would never go thirsty.
Posiden's gift seemed unbeatable. That is until the people realized the spring was salt water. This made the gift useless.
Athena was up next. Athena planted a seed and it grew into a great olive tree. The tree provided food, oil, and firewood. Also, olive trees were a symbol of peace and stability.
