- In 1915, Germany started sinking any ships that took supplies to Great Britain; some of these ships included Americans, so America warned Germany to stop. Germany didn’t want the U.S to get involved in the war at that time and wanted to keep the U.S occupied and out of Europe. Germany worried that the U.S was going to join the war, so they hoped to ally with Mexico. Before this in the Mexican-American War, Mexico had lost its territory to America. Germany believed that the British were at their breaking point, so they thought that this would be the final push to break the British. Germany, however, overestimated Mexico's abilities and believed that the message would stay between them and Mexico.

- we intend to begin on the first of February unrestricted submarine warfare. We shall endeavor in spite of this to keep the United States of America neutral. In the event of this not succeeding, we make mexico a proposal or alliance on the following basis: make war together, make peace together, generous financial support and an understanding on our part that Mexico is to reconquer the lost territory in Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona. The settlement in detail is left to you. You will inform the President of the above most secretly as soon as the outbreak of war with the United States of America is certain and add the suggestion that he should, on his own initiative, invite Japan to immediate adherence and at the same time mediate between Japan and ourselves. Please call the President's attention to the fact that the ruthless employment of our submarines now offers the prospect of compelling England in a few months to make peace - ZIMMERMAN

- In 1917 when Great Britain intercepted the telegram and told the U.S this caused outrage in America and many Americans who had remained neutral began supporting the war. This began to push America further towards War when America began to see Germany as a threat to the U.S. In 1917 with President Woodrow Wilson's influence America declared war on Germany. The U.S provided many military strengths to the Allied powers and helped lead them to victory in 1918. This war showed Americas strengths and helped them rise as a world power.
