  • He was quoting Lincoln because he fought for the rights of the Negro's, just like Martin Luther King is doing.

  • King uses this to emphasize the fact that all the African Americans including his own children are being discriminated just because of the color of their skin.

  • King is saying that all Negro's aren't free even after they were freed over 100 years ago"

  • "America has given the Negro people a bad check, a check where as come back marked insufficient funds, and so we have come to cash this check." (king)
  • King said this because he wants to remind us that Lincoln also fought for the rights of the African American's. That he signed the slaves to freedom. 
  • He is saying that he will not rest and neither will the rest of the African American's until they are granted the full citizenship they deserve. 
  • King said that the African American's have had a bad reputation and they are getting a good reputation back.
