After completing the readings, my biggest AHA moment is that PEOPLE ARE IMPORTANT. Listen to your people and they will tell you what they need. I enjoyed the sports analogy from the book on page 8 as it is incredibly true! You can find the best athletes in the world, but none of that will matter if they do not feel supported and chose not to play together for you. I have had this experience as an adult coaching and as an athlete. Open communication and feeling like your opinions matter is vital to a cohesive unit performance.

- Our labor unions and the city have been in debate for several years, which has cost our city several million dollars every year. We are arguing over the treatment of our workers, especially those struggling with the stress of our jobs.
- Well Hello There! Welcome to our city. I am the elected mayor and along with our council we make decisions for our cityof about 250,000 people.
- As the newly appointed City Manager, I want to take a broad approach to improve communication. I have found a grant that could help your workers and build trust. Now we can start talking about improving relationships.
- I will follow our improving relationships by measuring: cost of legal fees, improved scores on employee satisfaction surveys, and turnover rates of staff.
- All of my collecting has found we need the following: management meetings bi-weekly, employee recognition awards, professional skills training programs for needs based on assessment, confidential counseling, informal dispute resolution, and holiday parties and gatherings.
- With all of these changes, there was a 70% decrease in litigation cost that allowed money to be spent where it was needed and actually saved the city over $120,000 in direct costs.
- The biggest thing that I learned was to listen to the people you are trying to help. They will tell you what they need!! My AHA moment was when the case study was discussing all of the different people involved. Sometimes there are too many cooks in the kitchen. Trust your leaders to pass on information to their groups.
