  • In 1571, Portugal started trading goods with the country of Angola, Africa. They traded things like fruit first but after a while, they wanted gold, Ivory and diamonds. When other European nations realized Africa had expensive resources, they wanted these sources for themselves.

  • IN 1884, the Berlin conference was held by Otto von Bismark in Berlin, Germany. While this was after the Slave Trade ended in 1865, European powers till wanted the valuable resources. The meeting consisted of Bismark and a representative from Britain, Belgin, Portugal, France, and Italy. This meeting divided Africa evenly between European powers.

  • By the time Africa was free from British rule, British people had modernized Africa. They installed roads, railroads, and schools. Schools to the British were the most important because it "civilized" the Africans by teaching them to read, write, and speak English.
