(Phone Vibrates)
Student: Hi, can I schedule a counselling appointment?
(Typing a message)Of course, I'm available to schedule an appointment with you. When works for you?
(She waits for a response, but doesn't hear back for several hours)
A counsellor called Adeline is sitting at her desk, surrounded by paperwork and notes, when her phone vibrates with a new message.
(Typing a message) I'm sorry, I'm not available at that time. Can we try for a different time?
Adeline picks up her phone and opens WhatsApp to see a message from a student requesting an appointment.
(Typing a message) I have another appointment at 2 PM on Thursday. How about Monday at 4 PM?
She responds to the message, but the student doesn't respond for several hours.
(Send a message)Great, I have you scheduled for Monday at 4 PM. Is there anything you'd like to discuss during the appointment?
Later that day, the student responds and asks for a specific appointment time, which conflicts her schedule.
Student: How about tomorrow at 3 PM?
She tries to suggest alternative times, but the conversation becomes confusing and they struggle to keep track of which times work for the student.
Student: That works for me.
Eventually, she and the student settle on a time, but the process has been frustrating and time-consuming for both parties.
Student: I'd rather not say over text, but I'll be sure to bring it up during the session.
