After Easter dinner, which started as a wholesome night turned into a room full of tension. Parents, Shiela and Fred are having a conversation with their three children when Fred begins to critisize his son Dan for his failed buisness. The evening quickly becomes toxic.
“You’ve always been a disappointment, Dan,” Fred says coldly, the words cutting across the table like a knife. “All that money I gave you, and what do you have to show for it?” (Lapena 21).

The morning after Easter dinner, Shiela and Fred were both found dead by the maid. After the maid calls for help, the detectives arrive and start to investigate the scene. The three children know that they will look like suspects because of the argument that happened the night prior.
“This wasn’t random,” Fenton says quietly as she surveys the room. “Whoever did this wanted them dead” (Lapena 47).

The detectives question the three children on what they saw and if they took part in the murder. The detectives bring up how the neighbors heard raised voices the night before, and this makes Dan nervous to answer questions because he does not want to look guilty.
“We’ve been told there was some kind of argument,” Fenton says evenly. “You and your father didn’t always see eye to eye, did you?” (Lapena 73).
“He humiliated me every chance he got,” Dan finally snaps. “But I didn’t kill him” (Lapena 75).
