  • Early Communities in West Africa
  • Cousins, this looks like a good spot to set up our small community.
  • Yes, small it is. I heard only 18 people will be living here.
  • Villages in West Africa
  • Very well.
  • Hello. I am from another family community from across the river. I am here to ask for permission to join our communities to form a village. It will help both of us.
  • Town and Cities in West Africa
  • Yes, this will be a wonderful place to build our city.
  • With all the trading that is going on, we will have plenty of resources and money to build. Our iron tools are helping a lot.
  • Early communities in West Africa were family based, consisting of 15-20 extended family members. They were farming communities, and produced most of what they needed, and traded for stuff thy didn't have.
  • Kingdoms and Empires in West Africa
  • Wow! Trading has brought our city to immense wealth. Our ruler is conquering more and more territory, and we are growing into a kingdom!
  • As time went on, some family communities banded together to form villages. They were made from multiple extended families, and they banded togethor for help with flooding rivers or mining. They also produced most of what they needed, but traded for some things.
  • The End
  • THE END
  • Now, villages came together to form towns and cities. Soon, many people learned to use iron, and blacksmiths smelted it and bent it into useful shapes. This made farming way more efficient, and farmers made a surplus of crops. They traded and sold the crops, leaving people to go after other jobs. These towns and cities became very wealthy.
  • These powerful and rich cities conquered more and more land. Their kings had large armies, and they took territory fast. There were pros and cons of being part of a kingdom. Pros were that the king provided protection, the armies made trade routes safe, and the king spread goods across the empire. Cons were that every male had to serve in the army and everyone had to pay tribute.
  • I know. I also heard that the king is demanding people to pay tribute. This is when the people accept the king's authority and officially become his people.
