  • In 1700, the Cherokee were in South Carolina, Tennessee, North Carolina, Kentucky, Alabama, Georgia, and West Virginia. They were happy with their land. They had control over it and were living good lives.
  • Please help us! You owe us! We have a treaty!
  • I think you guys have got this! You don't need my protection. I'll just sit here watching.
  • All of a sudden, French fur traders moved into South Carolina. They wanted to trade with the Cherokee. The Cherokee people were not able to trade with them because Britain had signed a treaty with the Cherokee saying that they were not allowed to trade with the French. This made the Cherokee allies with the British.
  • We'll take your horses and show you!
  • We'll take your people hostage and show you!
  • The Cherokee thought they were friends on equal terms with the British. The British thought that they could control the Cherokee. This made problems since they both didn't think the same thing.
  • Is this all we get? We used to have all the land!
  • The French and their other Indian allies attacked the Cherokee. The Cherokee thought that the British would protet them since they had a treaty. The British did not protect them during the French and Indian War. This ended the 30 years of peace between the Cherokee and the British.
  • The Cherokee took revenge by stealing the British's horses. The British settlers fought back. The royal governor of South Carolina stopped all trade with the Cherokee and took their peace representatives as hostages. This started the Cherokee War.
  • For two years, the Cherokee War went on. Many Cherokee died. When the French and Indian War ended, the treaty made the Cherokee lose a lot of land. A boundary divided the South Carolina colony and the Cherokee colony.
