Numitor was the king of Alba Longa. He had 3 sons who would claim the throne after his death. But Amulius (Numitor's brother) wanted the throne all to himself, so he killed the boys. Amulius then became the new ruler and locked his niece in a tower, intending for her to become a nun so she wouldn't have children. If she did have kids, then they could overthrow him.

Rhea, Amulius' niece, was found by God Mars and eventually got her pregnant. This resulted in twin boys. When King Amulius found out, he put the twins outdoors so they would die from exposure. A servant helped the twins by placing them inside a basket in the Tiber River. A She-wolf found, saved, and fed the twins.
