- The Democratic presidential nominee was Al Gore, vice president under Bill Clinton. The Republican nominee was George W. Bush, who was the governor of Texas and the son of former president George H.W. Bush.
- The 2000 United States presidential election was the 54th quadrennial presidential election, held on Tuesday, November 7, 2000. Republican candidate George W. Bush, the governor of Texas and eldest son of the 41st president, George H. W. Bush, won the election, defeating incumbent Vice President Al Gore.
- At oral arguments on December 11, Bush’s legal team asserted that the Florida Supreme Court had exceeded its authority by ordering the manual recount of undervotes, while Gore’s team contended that the case, having already been decided at the state level, was not a matter for consideration at the federal level.
