- The main character, Will has an older-brother, Shawn who gets killed and he makes the decision to follow the "rules" and he goes to get revenge for his brother. Along the way he meets people from his past who have all died from gun violence. Will is having a lot of internal conflict because he is upset about Riggs (a friend from Shawn's past) killing his brother. Everyone from his past tells him he isn't about that life and he needs to go back home. Will feels scared, enraged and distraught because although he doesn't want to go and kill Riggs he knows the rules and he wants to live by them the same way his brother did.

- The gun is a Motif of where Will lives and what he has been taught to live by. It pertains to the theme because though out the whole text each ghost from Will's past notices the gun and asked him about it. They all remind Will of how they died and how he isn't cut out for this. They each tell Will that although his brother was about that life, he isn't, that he needs to go home and be there for their mom.
- One key idea represented though out the whole text is how Will isn't about that life of killing people and how e isn't ready for the consequences that he will have to face after he goes to kill Riggs. As each ghost gets on to the elevator they all tell him a story of how they died to gun violence. Will explains to them that he doesn't want to let his brother down by not seeking revenge. Although they understand where he is coming from they still don't him to go and do it
- The gun represents the passing down o violence form one generation to the next , the same way the "rules" (No crying, No snitching, and always get revenge) has been passed down
- Conflict is highlighted every time someone from Will's past enters the elevator and each time environmental justice is also being looked at. Everyone that is from Will's past was killed on the streets and it was due to constant gang violence in the neighborhood. This violence is in predominantly Black or Hispanic neighborhoods .
