- Melamphus was one of the wisest mortals that lived during the rule of the Olympian gods. This was because he could understand the language of the animals.
- Melamphus received this gift when he tended to infant snakes that had become orphaned. The snakes licked his ear clean in thanks, which allowed Melamphus to understand all creatures.
- Because of Melamphus's gift, he predicted that the roof of the cell he was in would fall down. Melamphus overheard two termites talking about the roof, and his decision to leave ultimately saved his life.
- The local king was astounded with the idea of Melamphus's prediction, so he asked Melamphus to cue his sickly son. Again, Melamphus listened to the animals and cured the child.
- A king from Tiryns asked Melamphus to cure his three daughters. They had gone crazy, and had roamed around the kingdom acting like cows.
- Melamphus cured the daughters, and in return, the king gave him a third of his kingdom along with a daughter for a wife. Afterward, Melamphus lived happily for the rest of his days.
