- Instance 1When Mariam left the kolba to visit Jalil, she came across his luxury car. "Mariam had never before touched a car. She ran her fingers along the hood of Jalil's car, which was black, shiny, with glittering wheels in which Mariam saw a flattened, widened version of herself." (Hosseini 32). Mariam later discovers that Jalil was in his home trying to avoid her despite being told that he was gone on a business trip, where she comes to the realization that she's never felt the true side of Jalil. This parallels with how she's never felt a car, subtlly foreshadowing this betrayal.

- Instance 2As Laila leaves her home to go to school, she "[spots] a car parked up the street, across from the house where the shoemaker, Rasheed, lived with his reclusive wife. It was a Benze, an unusual car in this neighborhood, blue with a thick white stripe bisecting the hood, the roof, and the trunk" (Hosseini 110). This car is implied to be one of Jalil's vehicles, his unique car being an striking contrast to the neighborhood. This symbolizes Jalils' two strikingly different personalities from when he's visiting Mariam to his life outside of these interactions. (the bike is only available if I pay money, so I had to improvise using motorcycle)
