Frederick Grant Banting was born in 1891, near Alliston, Ontario. He was the youngest of 5 kids to farmer William Banting and Margaret Grant, the daughter of a mill manager. He often felt secluded from his 3 brothers and sister, who were much older than him.

As a young man, Banting moved to Toronto to initially study art at the University of Toronto. After failing his first year, he transferred to the Faculty of Medicine. He struggled with dyslexia and often found academic work difficult, but his determination kept him going. He was described as quiet, serious, and deeply focused on helping others through medicine.

In 1916, Banting graduated early to serve in World War I as a medical officer. On the battlefield in France, he treated wounded soldiers under heavy fire and was himself injured. Despite his injuries, he continued working in the aid station and received the Military Cross for his bravery.
