Another of my notable accomplishments was participating in the Olympics four times! I was present at the Los Angeles Olympics in 1984, Seoul Olympics in 1988, Barcelona Olympics in 1992, and Atlanta Olympics in 1996. In my career, I earned nine olympic gold medals, and one silver!

Receiving several awards, but especially being inducted into the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame in 1999, and the National Track and Field Hall of Fame in 2001, have been special honors to me. Receiving these acknowledgements is culturally significant to me as an African American man, especially considering my parents' relocation of our lives during my childhood to escape discrimination.

Since my retirement from athletics in 1997, I am proud to have remained a coach, mentor, and public figure. Since 2018, I have been a Track and Field coach at the University of Houston, my alma mater! I have always intended to be a role model, especially for young African American athletes. A takeaway from my experiences, and something I always say, is, "To be a great champion, you must believe you are the best. If you’re not, pretend you are."
