  • In 1086, the Almoravids entered the Iberian Península, and in the same year they defeated the army of Alfonso VI of León in Sagrajas. They now ruled al-Andalus, incorporating its territory to their empire and imposing religious radicalism. The Almoravids disintegrated in 1145, causing a second taifa period.
  • The conquest of Marrakech in 1147 caused the Almohads to replace the Almoravids, first in North Africa and then in the Península. The Almohads slowed down the Christian conquests by defeating Alfonso VIII of Castilla in Alarcos in 1195.

  • In the year 1212, the Almohads were defeated on the Battle of Las Navas De Tolosa. This made the Christians advance through the Guadalquivir Valley. After this, the Almohad power started to decline, they collapsed into the third taifa period and they were slowly conquered by the Christians.
