  • Before Frederick left Sandy told him about a magic root, that he held, that would prevent him from being whipped again. Sandy insisted it worked because ever since Sandy held the root, he had never been whipped. At first Douglass didn’t believe him, but he took the root anyway and journeyed back to Covey’s.
  • When Douglass got back to the plantation Covey was not mad at all and he was actually happy. Mister Covey asked “Can you go drive the pigs from a lot nearby, and pass by the church” “ Yes sir” said Douglass. “ Can you go feed the horses?” said Covey. “ Yes sir” said Douglass. When Douglass was feeding the horses Mr. Covey came in with a long rope and Douglass was confused. Then, Covey leaped to reach Douglass's feet. Douglass was fighting to get out of the rope. He finally realized that Covey was trying to tie him up and whip him. Covey called out for help and Hughes came in and Douglass and him were fighting, then Douglass kicked him in the stomach so he couldn’t do anything. Covey called for backup and another slave came in and he didn’t know what to do so he left. Next, Covey gets the whip and Douglass hits it out of his hands. Then Douglass leaves the barn and won the fight.
  • The next day after the fight, Douglass was treated differently. Now Covey was scared of Douglass and he would not whip him anymore. Douglass was also getting treated differently by the slaves. He basically just escaped slavery, but he still had to work for Covey. It inspired Douglass to display self-confidence and inspired him to be determined.
