  • In a small cottage on Mount Chestnut Creek, Cara and Carter were spending the first week of August with their grandparents. The birds were chirping, the sun was shining, and the light breeze was heaven. Mount Chestnut Creek was a small mountain, but it felt huge compared to Grandma and Grandpa’s two bedroom cottage. Carter and Cara were playing in the garden while Grandma weeded. They were starting to get bored when suddenly Carter had an idea.
  • “Grandma, can Cara and I go for a hike?” Carter asked. The mountain was beautiful, and Cara and Carter had talked about exploring it at dinner last night. “Oh, I don’t know. The mountain is bigger than my garden, and I can’t watch you up there. What if you get lost?” Grandma asked. She glanced up the mountain, which was much bigger than her garden, as she had said. The mountain was like a giant, and Cara and Carter were as small as tiny ants compared to it.“Please Grandma, we won’t get lost,” Cara and Carter pleaded. “Oh all right,” Grandma answered. She packed a lunch bag for Cara and Carter and made them promise to be home by supper. With that, she waved goodbye, and went back to gardening.
  • Cara, Carter, and Dolly made their way down Mount Chestnut Creek towards their grandparent’s house. They stopped in the meadow and picked flowers for Grandma and Grandpa. The sunset was beautiful, full of streaks of color that looked like cotton candy. Dolly picked flowers too, with a little help from Cara. Once they got back, dinner was ready, and Grandma, Grandpa, Cara, Carter, and Dolly sat down to eat. The food smelled great.“So,” Grandpa asked, “What exactly did you kids do today?”
  • Cara and Carter set off on their hike up Mount Chestnut Creek. Cara had brought Dolly, her favorite doll because Cara never went anywhere without Dolly. The first place Cara and Carter stopped was in the meadow. They picked flowers, played tag, and soaked up the sun. There was a flowery smell that floated through the breeze. Cara smiled like it was Christmas morning and she was opening a gift.
  • The hike wasn’t that difficult, and soon they reached their picnic spot. After eating peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, Cara and Carter decided to play in the nearby creek. They splashed around until Carter said that it was time to head home. They were halfway home when Cara realized that she didn’t have Dolly.
  • “Carter!” Cara screamed, “Where’s Dolly?” Carter looked around, but Dolly was nowhere to be found. Cara’s tears rolled down her face like rain drops. Her eyelids were like flood gates bursting open. “Don't worry, we’ll find Dolly,” Carter said, smiling at Cara, “We’ll never give up, even if things get hard.” With that, they set off to find Dolly. First, they searched the meadow. They picked flowers for Dolly, but Dolly didn’t come out of hiding to receive them.
  • They went back to the picnic spot and yelled for Dolly, but Dolly didn’t respond. Cara and Carter were getting tired, so they went to one last place. The wide creek was still flowing, and Cara and Carter sat on stumps by the water. They were about to give up when all of the sudden, Cara spotted a doll hand sticking out of the bushes. She pulled the hand and revealed Dolly.
