  • Fredrick Douglas arrived at the Auld's home, before him was Mrs. and Mr. Auld and their little son Thomas. Immediately I could tell the face of his new mistress displayed the most kindly emotion.
  • She had never had a slave under he possession before, so she treated him kindly. She had taught him the ABC's and how to spell three to four letter words, soon he would be on his way to know how to read and write.
  • Their teachings had been brought to a halt when Mr. Auld had interrupted them proclaiming that teaching a slave to read is to make a slave disobedient
  • So Fredrick figured that the only was he was going to learn how to read was that he was going to use his food that he got from the Auld's and trade it to the white boys on the street for their knowledge and convert them into teachers to teach me how to read.
  • Fredrick used to talk to the kids about matter of slavery. This baffled the boys why Douglas couldn't be free, they always expressed the liveliest sympathy toward him.
  • The more Fredrick read the more he was led to detest his enslavers as Mr. Auld had predicted. Fredrick believed only that they were a band of successful robbers who had stolen him from his home, that they were the meanest most wicked people.
