In the North countries, there was a tradition to find the biggest log and burn it. Burning the Yule log started before the medieval times as part of the winter solstice celebration.
People used to decorate the pine trees with apples to represent the garden of Adan and Eve. This ignited many traditions and beliefs of how this tradition originated that we still celebrate today.
Because people could not keep most of the animals alive throughout the winter, they killed every animal except the ones they wanted to breed, and made a feast with that meat to celebrate.
